Clinical and Histological Analyses of 61 Cases of Primary Cicatricial Alopecia in Japanese subjects
Sixty-one patients with primary cicatricial alopecias (PCAs) seen at our hospital between April 2002 and September 2009 were classified and analyzed clinically and histologically according to the criteria proposed by North American Hair Research Society.
The study population included 23 male and 38 female Japanese subjects. The age of onset ranged from 0 to 84 years. The mean age of onset was 41.0 ± 20.1 years. The patients were subdivided by condition, as follows: chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus, 13 cases (21%);lichen planopilaris, 16 patients(26%); frontal fibrosing alopecia, 7 patients(11%); classic pseudopelade of Brocq, 5 patients(8%); central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, 1 patient(2%); folliculitis decalvans, 8 patients(13%); dissecting cellulites, 1 patient(2%); folliculitis keloidalis, 9 patients(15%); not categorized , 1 patient(2%). Some histological sections with hair follicles at the lesional margin were stained by antibodies against nestin and cytokeratin 15 to visualize the bulge area of the affected hair follicles
